Meet Helen Thomas, Chair of ONE

Helen Thomas has been the Managing Director of H. Weston & Sons Ltd, makers of traditional cider and perry, since 1996. The company remains a family business since it was established in 1880 by her Great Grandfather, Henry Weston.

Its primary business is to utilise its assets of equipment, buildings, farmland and people in producing quality and award winning cider and perry products for sale through specific distribution channels within UK and Export markets.

Whilst manufacturing processes had to change, Helen believes passionately in supporting the rural economy and obtaining most of her raw materials from local growers.  Westons farm 17.5 hectares of traditional standard orchards now in organic status and 75 hectares of bush orchards.

Helen is Chair of ONE and the NACM Pomology Group, a member of the Herefordshire Orchard Topic Group and UK Traditional Orchards HPA Goup.  Helen is also Chair of the Hereford Cider Museum, a Director of Visit Herefordshire and a member of the Herefordshire Business Board.

Meet Richard Johnson Cider Maker Thatcher's Somerset

Meet Edward Keene Gloucestershire Grower of Cider Apples, Dessert Apples and Blackcurrants

Edward is the third generation of a family farming business based at Newent in Gloucestershire. He is relatively new to cider growing and planted his first cider orchard in 1996. However, he has been in the fruit business since 1958 when he started growing blackcurrants for Ribena and subsequently bramleys, gala and cox for the supermarkets.

Today, Edward is focussed on producing cider apples for Bulmers and Thatchers Cider, and blackcurrants for Ribena. He believes customers rightly require a high quality product produced in an efficient and cost effective way, whilst at the same time enhancing and protecting the environment. This is how Edward has lived and worked and it is for this reason that he is interested in the work of ONE.

He is looking forward to continuing the work of ONE, seeking out and promoting best practise in cider apple production and supporting the cider processing industry.
